Why do the costs of root canal treatment vary?
- The costs of root canal treatment vary because not every tooth or molar needs the same treatment. A front tooth usually has fewer root canals than a molar, which often makes the treatment simpler and shorter. The price is determined by, among other things:
- the number of root canals;
- the position of the tooth or molar;
- the severity of the infection;
- the X-rays required;
- the number of appointments;
- the final filling or crown. For a complete overview of current dental fees, please refer to the website of the Dutch Healthcare Authority (NZa).
When is root canal treatment needed?
Root canal treatment is needed when the inner tissue of a tooth or molar is inflamed or infected. This tissue is called the pulp and consists of nerves and small blood vessels.
An infection can be caused by deep decay, a leaking filling, a crack in the tooth or a hard blow to the teeth. Complaints that may indicate root canal inflammation include persistent toothache, sensitivity to hot or cold drinks, pain when chewing or swelling of the gums. With timely treatment, we can often save the tooth or molar.
What do you get for the cost of root canal treatment?
For the cost of root canal treatment, you receive careful treatment aimed at removing the infection and saving the tooth. We start with an examination and usually take an X-ray to assess the course of the roots.
We then numb the area and isolate the tooth or molar with a rubber dam. Next, we open the molar, remove the inflamed tissue and clean the root canals with fine files and a disinfectant. After cleaning, we fill the canals and seal the tooth or molar with a filling.
In some cases we schedule the treatment over two appointments. You then receive a temporary filling after the first treatment, and we seal the molar permanently during the second appointment.
Is root canal treatment more expensive for a molar than for a front tooth?
Root canal treatment is often more expensive for a molar than for a front tooth, because molars usually have several root canals. The more canals that need to be treated, the more time and material the treatment requires.
A front tooth usually has one canal. A premolar often has one or two canals, and a large molar can have several. That is why at Loef Mondzorg you always receive a cost estimate based on your own situation.

Is root canal treatment covered by insurance?
For adults, root canal treatment is usually not covered by the basic health insurance. Possible reimbursement depends on your supplementary dental insurance.
We advise you to check your policy in advance or contact your health insurer. That way you know which part of the treatment is reimbursed and which amount you pay yourself. For children under 18, dental care is usually covered by the basic insurance, depending on the treatment and conditions.
