Dental implants
What is a dental implant?
An implant is a replacement for a tooth root, placed in the jawbone during a minor surgical procedure. This is usually done under local anaesthesia. Most implants look like a screw and are made of titanium, zirconia or a combination of these materials. The implant provides a strong foundation for an implant crown, implant bridge or (click-on) denture.
Implants when several teeth are missing
If several adjacent teeth or molars are missing, implants can be used to anchor a removable click-on partial denture. Alternatively, several implants can be placed to support an implant bridge. Just like an implant crown, this is fixed in your mouth and functions like natural teeth or molars.
Implants with a denture
If you wear a denture and there is little grip in your jaw, causing the denture to come loose when chewing, 2, 4 or 6 implants can be placed. A complete denture is then made that clicks onto the implants. Like a click-on partial denture, this overdenture is removable, so you can clean it thoroughly every day.
Treatment process
How is a dental implant placed?
If a tooth or molar has been missing for a long time, there may not be enough jawbone to anchor or place an implant. In most cases, new bone can be added with an additional treatment. This can be synthetic bone or your own bone, for example from your jaw. After 4–12 months, depending on the situation and healing, the implant can be placed.

01
Preliminary examination
Before implants are placed, the implantologist carries out a thorough dental examination. In implant treatment, your general and dental health affect the success of the treatment. During this examination, the quality and quantity of the bone are assessed, among other things through visual inspection and additional X-rays. This is done after the molar or tooth has been extracted, but preferably while the tooth or molar is still present.
-
02
Anaesthesia
During the treatment, the implant is placed in the jawbone under local anaesthesia. Over the following 2 to 6 months, the jawbone fuses with the implant. After that, the crown, bridge or click-on denture can be made.

03
Placing the implant
An implant is placed in 1 or 2 stages. In a 1-stage procedure, the cover screw (healing abutment) is visible above the gum. In a 2-stage procedure, the implant is placed and the gum is closed over it again. Once the implant has integrated, a small incision is made in the gum and the healing abutment is placed.

Minimal complications
The chance that an implant integrates successfully is very high. A thorough dental examination by the practitioner before treatment keeps the risk of complications or failure to a minimum. Immediately after an implant is placed, you may experience some temporary discomfort, such as pain or swelling.
