What to do if a tooth is knocked out?
If a tooth is knocked out, it is especially important to stay calm and do the following:
- Hold the tooth by the top (the crown).
- Do not touch the root, as it contains fibres that are important for getting the tooth healthily back into the mouth.
- If possible, rinse the tooth, root and all, under cold running water for 10 seconds.
- Do not dry the knocked-out tooth, but put it back in place immediately.
- If that is not possible, keep the tooth in milk or in the mouth, for example between the molars and the cheek, and make an appointment as soon as possible, within the hour. The faster you are, the greater the chance that the tooth can be placed back healthily in the mouth.
Please note: do not put a baby tooth back. Putting a baby tooth back can damage the permanent tooth that still has to come through. To be safe, do visit the dentist to have it assessed.
How is a tooth put back?
Contact us during the day. We are also open in the evenings and at weekends, and you can reach us then too. If this is not possible, you can look for an emergency dentist.
We assess whether the knocked-out tooth can still be put back. We can do this professionally, so that the tooth can possibly be saved.
We will put the knocked-out tooth back and attach it to the neighbouring teeth or molars. The tooth usually reattaches by itself.
In the following weeks, we will regularly check whether further treatment is needed by testing the tooth or molar for sensitivity to heat and cold, which tells us a lot about the nerve. Root canal treatment may be needed if the nerve of the tooth or molar has died.
The tooth may no longer be able to be put back. In that case, we will propose an alternative treatment to fill the gap in your teeth.

Can a loose tooth reattach?
A loose tooth can certainly reattach. The loose tooth can be held in the right place with a splint until it has reattached.
How quickly should I call the dentist if I have lost a tooth?
The faster, the better the chance that we can successfully put the tooth back. Preferably within the hour.
