Tooth discolouration due to DNA
The colour of your teeth, like the colour of your hair and eyes, is determined by your DNA. As we get older, the dentine changes colour and teeth become more yellow. Dentine is the soft tissue beneath the enamel that protects the nerve of your tooth. These discolourations occur from the inside and are called intrinsic discolourations. Intrinsic discolouration cannot be removed with anti-stain or anti-tartar toothpaste.
Teeth whitening
The most common way to whiten your teeth is with a whitening tray and whitening gel. First, we examine your mouth to assess whether your mouth and gums are healthy. We then take an impression of your teeth using a tray and a paste that hardens. From the impression, whitening trays are made that fit your teeth exactly. The practitioner will show you how to apply a small amount of whitening gel to the trays and how to insert them. You then take the gel and trays home and can continue the treatment at home. In consultation with the practitioner, it is decided how long and how often you wear the trays. Your teeth will feel softer for 24 hours after each treatment. This is temporary.

Frequently asked questions
Why do teeth become discoloured?
Discolouration of the teeth can be caused by your lifestyle, for example smoking or food and drinks with a lot of colouring, such as coffee. But your DNA also plays a role. As we get older, the dentine (the soft tissue beneath the enamel) changes colour and teeth become more yellow.
Can discoloured teeth become white again?
To make your teeth white again, we can whiten them for you. This is a simple and painless treatment.
Is teeth whitening possible for everyone?
Teeth whitening is suitable for almost everyone. Of course, we look at your personal situation before we start any treatment.
