What does an endodontist do?
An endodontist is a dentist who specialises in treating problems inside the tooth – the pulp. The pulp consists of nerves and blood vessels that supply the tooth with nutrients. When the pulp becomes inflamed or infected, this can cause severe pain and threaten the health of your teeth.
During root canal treatment, the endodontist at our practice in Rotterdam removes the inflamed tissue, cleans the root canals and then seals them carefully. This prevents further infection and restores the health of your tooth.
When is root canal treatment needed?
Treatment by our endodontist in Rotterdam is needed when the nerve of the tooth is inflamed or at risk of becoming inflamed. This can have various causes, such as:
- Deep decay (cavities)
- A hard blow or fall on the tooth
- Repeated dental treatments on the same tooth
- A leaking filling or crown
Typical complaints are persistent toothache, pain with cold or heat, swelling of the gums or discolouration of the tooth. Without treatment, the infection can spread into the jawbone, leading to a painful infection at the root tip. It is therefore essential that you make an appointment as soon as possible to solve this problem and prevent further problems.
Treatment process
How does root canal treatment work at Loef Mondzorg?
At Loef Mondzorg the endodontist carries out root canal treatment with the utmost precision and modern equipment. A treatment consists of several steps:
-
01
Examination and anaesthesia
first we take an X-ray to determine the shape of the root canals. We then numb the area so the treatment is comfortable
-
02
Cleaning the root canals
the tooth is opened through the chewing surface. The endodontist then removes the inflamed tissue and cleans the canals with fine files and a disinfecting liquid
-
03
Filling and sealing
the cleaned canals are filled with a durable filling material (gutta-percha) and sealed with a filling
-
04
Recovery and aftercare
sometimes a second appointment is needed to finish the tooth with a crown for extra strength
Costs of treatment by the endodontist
The cost of root canal treatment varies per tooth and the complexity of the treatment. On average, the cost is between €350 and €800 per tooth. During the consultation you receive a clear cost estimate tailored to your personal situation.
Loef Mondzorg is happy to help you check reimbursement via your (supplementary) dental insurance. For a complete overview of current dental fees, please refer to the website of the Dutch Healthcare Authority (NZa).

Frequently asked questions about endodontics
What is the difference between a dentist and an endodontist?
A dentist treats general dental problems. An endodontist specialises in performing complex root canal treatments and retreatments.
Is root canal treatment painful?
No, thanks to modern anaesthesia techniques you will not feel any pain during the treatment. Afterwards the tooth may be somewhat sensitive for a while, but this passes quickly.
Can an infection return after treatment?
In some cases an infection can return, for example due to a hidden canal or a new infection. We then carry out a retreatment to clean and fill the tooth again.
How long does a treated tooth last?
With good oral hygiene and regular check-ups, a treated tooth can often last for decades.
