Reliability & quality
What is toothache and how does it develop?
Toothache is usually caused by a problem in or around a molar. This can range from an early cavity to a deeper inflammation of the nerve. The pain can be constant or flare up when chewing, with temperature changes or with sweet foods.
Common causes of toothache are tooth decay, a leaking filling, an inflamed root canal or gum problems. Grinding or clenching can also cause pressure pain in the molars.
What symptoms go with toothache?
Toothache can show itself in different ways. Many patients experience:
- Persistent or throbbing pain in a molar
- Sharp pain with hot, cold or sweet food and drinks
- Pain when chewing or pressing on the molar
- Pain radiating to the jaw, ear or head
- Swelling or sensitive gums around the molar
The severity of the complaints does not always say anything about the extent of the problem. That is why it is important to always have toothache checked.
When should you see a dentist with toothache?
You do not need to see the dentist right away for every slight sensitivity, but with persistent or worsening toothache it is wise to make an appointment quickly. If the pain lasts longer than one or two days, or gets worse, we recommend making an appointment to have it examined.
In case of severe pain, swelling or fever, we advise contacting Loef Mondzorg immediately. In that case we schedule an appointment as soon as possible to prevent further complications.
How do we treat your toothache at Loef Mondzorg?
The treatment of toothache depends on the cause. During your visit we always start with a thorough examination, possibly supplemented with X-rays. Based on this, we draw up a targeted treatment plan.
Depending on the diagnosis, the treatment may consist of replacing a filling, treating gum problems or carrying out root canal treatment. In all cases we aim to relieve the pain and save your molar.

What happens if toothache is not treated?
Untreated toothache can lead to more serious problems. A small infection can spread into a root tip infection or abscess, resulting in swelling and severe pain. In some cases this can even lead to the loss of the molar.
By acting in time, you prevent long-lasting complaints and drastic treatments.
What can you do yourself about toothache?
Until your appointment, you can take a few measures to temporarily relieve the complaints. Avoid chewing on the painful side, do not eat hard or extremely cold or hot foods, and keep your mouth clean.
Preferably do not apply painkillers directly to the molar, and do not postpone a visit to the dentist. Toothache rarely goes away on its own and can get worse without treatment.

Frequently asked questions about toothache
Can toothache go away on its own?
Toothache can temporarily decrease or even disappear, but that does not always mean the cause has gone. A cavity, damaged filling or infection may continue to develop in the meantime. We therefore advise always having recurring or persistent toothache checked by our dentist.
How long can toothache last?
If toothache lasts longer than one or two days, we recommend making an appointment with the dentist. Contact us sooner if the pain keeps getting worse, interferes with your daily activities or does not decrease sufficiently with painkillers.
When is toothache an emergency?
We treat severe toothache that cannot be properly relieved as an emergency. Also contact us immediately if you have toothache combined with a swollen cheek, swelling, fever or a possible infection. Our emergency dentist in Rotterdam assesses your complaints and discusses how quickly treatment is needed.
What helps temporarily against toothache?
Until your appointment, try not to chew on the painful side and avoid very hot, cold and sweet foods if they trigger the pain. Keep your teeth carefully clean. For pain relief, we advise following the instructions in the package leaflet or asking your pharmacist for advice.
Is toothache always caused by a cavity?
No. Besides tooth decay, a leaking or damaged filling, inflamed gums, a problem with the tooth nerve, and teeth grinding or jaw clenching can all cause toothache. During the examination we determine where the pain comes from and which treatment is appropriate.
Can toothache come and go?
Yes, toothache does not have to be present all the time. The pain may, for example, only occur when chewing or with hot, cold or sweet food. Even if the complaints disappear in between, we advise a check-up if the toothache keeps coming back.
What does the dentist do for toothache?
Our dentist first examines the painful molar and the surrounding gums. If necessary, we take an X-ray to better assess the cause. Depending on what we find, the treatment may consist of restoring a filling, treating the gums or carrying out root canal treatment
