What does an oral surgeon do for mouth and dental complaints?
An oral surgeon is a medical specialist who performs surgical treatments in and around the mouth and jaw. In dentistry this often involves procedures such as removing wisdom teeth, surgical extractions, and treatment of infections or abnormalities in the jawbone.
At Loef Mondzorg we do not perform oral surgery ourselves. Our dentists only assess mouth- and teeth-related complaints and determine whether a referral to an oral surgeon is necessary.
When can Loef Mondzorg refer you to an oral surgeon?
A referral to an oral surgeon is considered when a complaint cannot be treated within regular dentistry. This applies, for example, to:
- Problems with (wisdom) teeth that are not easy to remove
- Infections or swellings in the jawbone of dental origin
- Surgical tooth extractions
- Persistent pain around teeth or molars that requires surgical assessment
Jaw complaints that are not related to the teeth or mouth, such as muscle, nerve or joint complaints without a dental cause, fall outside the dentist's expertise.
Treatment process
How does the process work via Loef Mondzorg?
At Loef Mondzorg we guide you carefully when an oral surgery assessment is needed:
-
01
Dental examination
our dentist examines your teeth, jaw and complaints and takes X-rays if necessary
-
02
Assessment of the cause
we determine whether the complaint is dental in nature and can be treated within our practice
-
03
Targeted referral
if surgical care is needed, you receive a referral to an oral surgeon (usually via the hospital)
-
04
Aftercare at Loef Mondzorg
after the treatment by the oral surgeon, you can come back to us for check-ups and further oral care

Costs and reimbursement of oral surgery
Oral surgery is usually performed in hospital and is often classed as medical specialist care. Depending on the procedure and your insurance, (part of) the treatment may be reimbursed by the basic health insurance. The oral surgeon or hospital will inform you about the costs in advance. At Loef Mondzorg we are happy to help with explanations and preparation.
