What is a fluoride treatment?
A fluoride treatment is a dental treatment in which the dentist applies a concentrated fluoride gel, varnish or solution to the teeth. The fluoride penetrates the enamel and makes it stronger, so your teeth are better protected against acid attacks and cavities.
Fluoride also helps stop or even reverse early cavities by remineralising the enamel. This makes it a valuable preventive treatment.
Who is a fluoride treatment suitable for?
Fluoride treatments are intended for anyone who needs extra protection against tooth decay. At Loef Mondzorg we mainly recommend this treatment for:
- Children and teenagers: their enamel is still developing and therefore extra vulnerable to cavities.
- Adults at increased risk: for example with a dry mouth, braces, sensitive teeth or a history of tooth decay.
- Patients with wear or exposed tooth necks: fluoride strengthens the enamel and reduces sensitivity.
Not everyone needs a fluoride treatment. During your six-monthly check-up, the dentist advises whether a fluoride treatment would be a good addition for you.
How often is a fluoride treatment needed?
The frequency of fluoride treatments varies by age and oral situation. The following guidelines are often used:
-
01
Children (2–12 years)
For children we recommend a fluoride treatment every 6 months. At this age the teeth develop quickly, and fluoride helps strengthen the enamel and prevent cavities.
-
02
Teenagers (13–19 years)
Due to hormonal changes and changing eating habits, we advise one fluoride treatment a year to keep the enamel strong.
-
03
Adults (18 and over)
Adults without increased risk need a treatment only once every 1 to 2 years.
-
04
People at high risk of tooth decay
With a dry mouth, high sugar or acid consumption, or orthodontic appliances, we advise a treatment every 3 to 4 months.
Treatment process
What does a fluoride treatment at Loef Mondzorg involve?
A fluoride treatment is comfortable, painless and takes only a few minutes. The treatment proceeds as follows:
-
01
Cleaning the teeth
we remove surface plaque so the fluoride adheres better
-
02
Applying fluoride
we apply a gel, foam or varnish to all teeth and molars
-
03
Exposure time
the fluoride is given a few minutes to absorb
-
04
Aftercare advice
we advise you not to eat or drink for 60 minutes after the treatment for optimal effect
Costs of a fluoride treatment
The costs of fluoride treatments are set annually by the Dutch Healthcare Authority (NZa). As a result, the fees are the same throughout the Netherlands.
