When do I need braces?
Orthodontic treatment is carried out by a dentist specialising in orthodontics or by an orthodontist. Braces straighten crooked teeth. Straight teeth look attractive and are easier to keep clean. A regular set of teeth also makes it easier to bite, chew, speak and smile.
Causes of crooked teeth
Often the reason people need braces is a combination of incorrect jaw growth and irregular positioning of the teeth. Early loss of a baby tooth or molar due to an accident can hinder the development and growth of the mouth. Oral habits such as thumb sucking and tongue thrusting, or the use of a dummy, also change the shape of the jaw and the position of the teeth and molars.
Can I get braces at any age?
Orthodontic treatment is possible at any age. More and more adults are choosing braces. Children are best treated between the ages of 10 and 15. Jaw growth can then still be influenced, and use is made of the space created when baby teeth are replaced.

Treatment process
Treatment
Orthodontic treatment can be divided into three phases: preparation and examination, treatment, and follow-up. We walk through this in six steps so you know what to expect.
-
01
First visit to the orthodontist or orthodontic dentist
Your dentist has said that you or your child may need braces. In some cases the dentist can carry out the treatment, but they may also refer you to an orthodontist, after which a first appointment follows.
-
02
Preliminary examination
To prepare an analysis, treatment plan and cost estimate, the practitioner needs dental models and photos.
-
03
Follow-up appointment
During this consultation the treatment plan and cost estimate are discussed. The treatment plan states which type of braces will be fitted and how long they need to be worn. This is always an indication, because the duration depends on whether the braces are worn enough. With children, the transition from baby teeth and growth also play a role. The practitioner will agree with you how often you are expected for a braces check-up. The braces consultation may only be charged once per month, even if you visit several times in the same month.
-
04
Treatment
The treatment is carried out as discussed during the follow-up appointment. If the treatment does not go as planned, takes longer and costs more, the practitioner will inform you in good time. New photos may need to be taken. Sometimes it is sensible to check the situation in your mouth in the meantime.
-
05
End of treatment
When the treatment is complete, the braces are removed and a retainer (a splint or night brace) is fitted.
-
06
Follow-up
After the treatment, the practitioner will want to see you a number of times to check that the result is maintained, and whether the retainer still fits properly.

Risks
If you do not keep your teeth clean, spots and cavities can develop and your gums may recede slightly. Do you experience complaints in your jaw joint? Report this to your practitioner. Orthodontic treatment can result in shortening of the roots (root resorption). Wearing your braces inconsistently, and nail biting or thumb sucking during treatment, can be a cause. Root resorption stops when the treatment ends. If something is wrong with your braces, it is advisable to contact us immediately. In case of severe pain, call the practice's emergency number.
How can I make sure my treatment goes as quickly as possible?
Not all factors that contribute to the duration of your treatment are under your control. But you can reduce the risk of a longer treatment by at least following the points below.
- Follow your orthodontist's advice
- Keep your teeth clean
- Avoid nail biting and thumb sucking
- Wear your braces for as long as agreed
