At Loef Mondzorg in Rotterdam you can come to us for check-ups, guidance and treatment of your gum problems. If specialist periodontal care turns out to be necessary, we will refer you to an experienced periodontist in the Rotterdam area.
What exactly does a periodontist do?
A periodontist is a dentist who specialises in treating serious and advanced gum problems, such as periodontitis that has already caused jawbone loss. While a dental hygienist focuses on prevention and initial treatment, a periodontist treats complex cases that require more specialised care.
At Loef Mondzorg, our dental hygienist first assesses how serious your gum problems are. If additional specialist treatment turns out to be necessary, we arrange a suitable and clear referral to a periodontist.
When do you need to see a periodontist?
A referral to a periodontist may be necessary if your gum problems do not recover sufficiently after treatment by the dental hygienist. Signs that may point to this include:
- Gums that bleed when brushing or eating
- Persistent bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth
- Receding gums or sensitive tooth necks
- Loose teeth or a change in the position of your teeth
- Visible gaps between your teeth and gums
The sooner periodontitis is treated, the greater the chance of your gums recovering fully and of keeping your teeth. So if you notice signs of gum inflammation, make an appointment straight away or register with us so you can then book an appointment.
Treatment process
How is gum disease treated at Loef Mondzorg?
At Loef Mondzorg we always start with a thorough diagnosis. The treatment is carried out in stages:
-
01
Examination and diagnosis
we measure the depth of the pockets (the space between the tooth and the gum) and take X-rays to see whether there is any jawbone loss
-
02
Treatment by the dental hygienist
in many cases there is no periodontitis yet and the dental hygienist starts with an intensive cleaning. During this cleaning we remove the tartar and bacteria below your gum line
-
03
Evaluating the result
after a certain period we assess whether your gums are recovering sufficiently
-
04
Referral if necessary
if the treatment does not work well enough or the periodontitis is advanced, we refer you to a specialist periodontist for further treatment
Cost of periodontal treatment
The cost of gum treatment varies from case to case. The initial treatment by the dental hygienist falls under the regular dental care fees. If a referral to a periodontist is necessary, you will receive a treatment plan and cost estimate there. The cost of specialist periodontal care is on average between €600 and €1,200, depending on the severity and duration of the treatment.

Aftercare & maintenance
After periodontal treatment, your gums may be sensitive for a few days, especially when brushing. This is normal and usually passes quickly. Good oral hygiene is crucial for the treatment to be successful. Brush twice a day with a soft toothbrush, use interdental brushes or floss and come in regularly for check-ups. By looking after your gums well, you prevent the inflammation from coming back and keep your teeth healthy for longer.

Frequently asked questions for our dentist in Rotterdam
Can periodontitis be reversed?
In the early stage (gingivitis), inflamed gums can recover fully. Once jawbone has been lost, we call it periodontitis. This loss can no longer be reversed, but with the right treatment we can stop the process.
Is periodontal treatment painful?
No, the treatment is carried out under local anaesthetic. At most, you may feel some sensitivity or after-pain in the days that follow.
Can I do anything myself to prevent periodontitis?
Yes, good oral hygiene is key. Brush thoroughly, use interdental brushes and come in regularly for check-ups and professional cleaning.
What happens if periodontitis is not treated?
Without treatment, the inflammation spreads further, which can eventually lead to loose teeth and even tooth loss.
Is periodontal treatment covered by insurance?
For adults, this treatment is not covered by the basic health insurance, but it is often partly covered by supplementary dental insurance. We recommend checking this with your insurer beforehand.
