What is a periodic check-up?
A periodic check-up is a routine examination in which the dentist checks your oral health. During this appointment we assess whether there are problems such as cavities, gum inflammation or tooth wear. The dentist checks, among other things:
- Your teeth and molars for cavities and wear
- The condition of the gums
- Existing fillings and crowns
- Plaque and tartar
- The jaw joint and chewing muscles
If necessary, we take X-rays to detect problems that are not visible to the naked eye.
This is why a periodic check-up is important
A periodic check-up helps detect dental problems at an early stage. Many problems in the mouth develop without you noticing straight away. By having your teeth checked regularly, we can:
- Treat cavities early
- Prevent gum problems
- Identify wear of your teeth
- Detect damage to any fillings or crowns
- Keep your oral health good in the long term
Early treatment often prevents more extensive and more expensive treatment in the future.

Costs of a periodic check-up
The costs of a periodic check-up are set nationally by the Dutch Healthcare Authority (NZa) and are therefore the same at every dental practice in the Netherlands.
The cost of a standard periodic check-up is on average around €25 to €30. If X-rays are needed, the costs may be slightly higher. These costs are often partly or fully reimbursed by the basic health insurance.
