Tartar treatment
Once tartar has formed, it can be removed by a dental hygienist, prevention assistant or dentist. Tartar can be removed in two ways: with a small hook, which scrapes the tartar away, or with a device that produces ultrasonic vibrations. The vibrations loosen the tartar.
After the treatment, your teeth can be polished. Polishing is done with a small brush and a polishing paste. The paste is applied to your teeth, after which the teeth are polished with the brush.
Why have tartar removed?
Removing tartar tackles one of the causes of gum inflammation. If you maintain good oral hygiene after the cleaning, your gums can recover. Polishing removes unwanted staining and restores the appearance of your teeth.
Over time, tartar can cause gum problems. It is therefore important to have tartar removed. Even better is to prevent it. Brush your teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and also clean between your teeth with floss, toothpicks or interdental brushes. You can always ask your practitioner for a personalised plan.

Frequently asked questions
How can you prevent tartar?
Brush your teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Also clean between your teeth with floss, toothpicks or interdental brushes.
How often should tartar be removed?
This depends entirely on how well you keep your mouth clean yourself and whether you are prone to building up tartar. It is common to have this done twice a year.
What is the difference between plaque and tartar?
Plaque can turn into tartar. Over time, plaque hardens and calcifies, at which point we call it tartar. This usually happens in places that are hard to reach when brushing.
What colour is plaque?
Plaque has a cream-coloured tint, which means it is not always easy to see. When it calcifies and becomes tartar, it turns yellow, brown, grey or even black.
