Types of dentures
A removable denture is one of the most commonly used solutions for replacing missing teeth and molars. The quality and appearance of dentures today are much better than in the past. Often, it is barely noticeable that someone is wearing a denture.
If you wear a denture or are considering one to restore your smile and replace missing teeth, we can also offer an implant-retained denture to guarantee stability. With a denture on implants, you can wear your denture with confidence as it clicks into place, giving you a stable and solid foundation.
If you are missing a number of teeth or molars, a partial denture helps you bite, chew and speak better. A partial denture can also improve the appearance of your teeth and protects the remaining teeth against wear and decay. Without a partial denture, the natural teeth can become crooked or shift. Depending on the material it is made of, a partial denture is also called an acrylic plate denture or a framework denture.

Treatment process
The treatment
To make a denture, we go through several steps with you.
-
01
Impression of your teeth
To make sure the denture fits your mouth exactly, we first make a digital scan. A dental technician uses this impression to make a plaster model, from which a resin model can be developed. The dentist places this model in your mouth to determine the position of your jaws relative to each other. The dentist then adjusts this model so that the dental technician knows how your teeth should meet, and the technician adjusts the denture accordingly.
-
02
Trial denture
First, a trial denture is made, which the dentist fits in your mouth. Before making some final adjustments, the dentist will ask you how the denture fits, feels and looks. The trial denture is then fully finished by the dental technician, after which the denture is ready for use. The dentist will place the denture immediately after the teeth and molars have been removed. This way, you do not have to go out without teeth. It also acts as a kind of dressing on the wounds.
-
03
Appointment after placing the denture
After a few weeks, the dentist will make a new appointment with you to assess how you are getting on with the denture. If there are any problems, the dentist can make small adjustments.
How much does this treatment cost?
Denture material
Full dentures are made of acrylic (plastic). Partial dentures can also be made entirely of acrylic (plate denture). Sometimes they are made from a combination of acrylic (for the teeth) and metal (for the framework). This is called a framework denture. A framework denture can be secured better and is less bulky, but it is considerably more expensive.

Cleaning a denture
If you have a denture, it is wise to keep it clean. Here are some tips for keeping your denture clean:
- Clean the denture daily
- To clean your denture, you can use special cleaning products and a (denture) brush. It is important to rinse the denture before putting it back in your mouth
- Clean your denture over a bowl of water or over the sink. If you drop it, it is less likely to be damaged
- Brush your gums and tongue with an ordinary toothbrush
- When your denture is not in your mouth (for example at night), keep it in clean water or a cleaning solution
- Do not use toothpaste for cleaning, as it is too abrasive for your denture
Getting used to a denture
A denture will feel different from your own teeth and it takes a while to get used to it. At first, sore spots, known as pressure points, may develop. It is important that you keep wearing the denture and make an appointment with your dentist to resolve the problems. Also keep the denture in your mouth at night during the first week. After that, it is better to take it out at night.

Frequently asked questions
What types of dentures are there?
There are different types of dentures: partial dentures (plate or framework dentures), full dentures, immediate dentures (temporary dentures) and implant-supported dentures (click-on dentures).
Why is it better to take out your denture at night?
To prevent further wear of the jaw joint and the denture, it is better to take the denture out at night. You also cannot grind your teeth, and your gums and jaw get a chance to rest.
How can I clean my denture?
The best way to keep your denture clean is with lukewarm water and mild soap. Do not use toothpaste, as it can be abrasive and damage the denture. Is there a lot of tartar on it? Then you can also clean your denture with water and vinegar.
