How mouth ulcers develop
The cause is still unknown. Possible causes include a tooth rubbing against the tongue or cheek. A vitamin deficiency, certain foods, anaemia, hormonal changes, lack of sleep and even stress also seem to play a role.
What can you do about mouth ulcers?
If the discomfort is unbearable, you can get a dab-on liquid from the chemist or pharmacy to relieve the pain. Good oral hygiene, possibly together with an antibacterial mouthwash, is also important. If you have a mouth ulcer, avoid acidic foods such as citrus fruits and tomatoes, as the acid irritates the ulcer. If mouth ulcers persist for longer than 2 weeks, it is advisable to contact us.
Preventing mouth ulcers
There are indications that daily use of a toothpaste with a mild foaming agent (such as Elmex, Zendium or Parodontax) helps prevent mouth ulcers.
