How can you recognise an abscess?
An abscess is generally noticed quite quickly. You will mainly notice it from pain when chewing or when pressing on the affected tooth. The cheek and the lymph nodes in the neck can swell considerably with this kind of inflammation.
Sometimes you feel pain but do not know exactly which tooth it is. If you cannot clearly indicate which tooth hurts, the dentist will tap on the various teeth and molars with an instrument to determine which tooth is sensitive. The dentist may also take an X-ray to determine which tooth is involved.
Abscess treatment
Abscesses in the mouth can be very painful, but can be treated relatively easily. Depending on the cause, the dentist will generally resolve the abscess with root canal treatment or a thorough cleaning below the gum line. If the gum is very swollen and contains a lot of pus, we will first relieve the abscess and let the pus drain to reduce the pressure.
In case of severe, persistent pain, antibiotics are sometimes prescribed. In the first period, painkillers will be needed to give the antibiotics time to work.

Frequently asked questions
Can an abscess heal on its own?
Unfortunately, an abscess will not heal on its own. If it is not treated, the inflammation can spread further.
How do I recognise an abscess on the gums?
There is mainly swelling and redness around the painful area. You may also develop a fever.
How does an abscess develop?
If treatment of cavities in the teeth or molars is postponed, the dentine can be affected, creating room for bacteria. The bacteria can cause an inflammation that may form an abscess.
