What does this treatment involve?
Why an extraction?
While dentists and dental hygienists do everything they can to preserve the health of our patients' teeth, extraction is sometimes the only option. A tooth must be removed, for example, if it has been irreparably damaged by an accident or trauma, weakened by decay or is no longer healthy due to an internal root infection. Patients may also need affected wisdom teeth removed, or teeth removed before orthodontic treatment.
The procedure
Your dentist will use a local anaesthetic to numb the affected area. Once the area is numb, the actual procedure can be completed fairly quickly, which means discomfort is minimal. Once the tooth has been removed, we will make sure you are pain-free and recommend the best painkillers to manage any discomfort in the following days. Sometimes, if the teeth are severely affected or you want several teeth removed at once, we may refer you to an oral surgeon. However, we will always first try to take care of your dental needs in our practice.

Frequently asked questions
What should I eat after a tooth extraction?
Be careful with hot food or drinks on the first day. Also try not to chew food that is too hard. Avoid alcohol for the first 5 days to prevent the blood clot that has formed from bleeding again.
How do I keep the extraction wound clean?
Avoid rinsing your mouth on the first day so you do not dislodge the blood clot. You may rinse your mouth with a prescribed mouthwash. Brush your teeth as usual, but be careful around the extraction site.
Why a tooth extraction?
A tooth extraction may be chosen if room needs to be made for other teeth. A tooth that is too badly affected by decay or gum inflammation may also be removed.
