What is root canal treatment?
Root canal treatment, also called endodontic treatment, is necessary when the inner tissue of the tooth, the pulp, becomes inflamed or infected. During the treatment, the dentist removes the inflamed tissue, cleans and disinfects the canal, and then fills it to prevent further infection. This procedure helps preserve the natural tooth and avoids the need for extraction.
These are possible causes of root canal inflammation
Root canal inflammation can be caused by:
- Deep decay (cavities) that lets bacteria reach the pulp
- Repeated dental procedures on the same tooth
- Cracks or fractures in the tooth
- Trauma to the tooth, even without visible damage
It is important to take these symptoms seriously and call us for an appointment in time to prevent complications.
How does root canal treatment work at Loef Mondzorg in Rotterdam?
First we take an X-ray to determine the course of the roots and give you a local anaesthetic. The dentist then places a rubber dam, a small rubber sheet that isolates your molar and ensures a clean and dry working area. Next, the dentist opens your molar through the chewing surface and removes the inflamed tissue and the nerve from the canal with fine files. We then rinse thoroughly with a disinfectant to remove all bacteria.
After cleaning, we fill the canals with rubber points and seal your molar permanently with a filling. We usually carry out the treatment over two appointments: after the first appointment your molar gets a temporary filling, and during the second appointment we permanently fill the root canals and the molar.
What are the risks of root canal treatment?
Root canal treatment involves some risks. During the treatment there is a small chance of complications. For example, a file may break and remain in the root tip, or accidentally perforate the root wall because the file does not follow the natural shape of the canal. If your molar is severely weakened, we may place a crown to give the molar extra strength.
After the treatment you may temporarily experience some pain, which usually subsides on its own within a few days. However, if you continue to have severe pain or the complaints do not decrease, contact us immediately.
We carry out the treatment under anaesthesia
Many people immediately think of pain when it comes to root canal treatment, but that certainly does not have to be the case. At Loef Mondzorg we make sure you experience as little discomfort as possible, especially if you come to us in time. Thanks to our effective anaesthesia techniques, we make the treatment as comfortable as possible for you.

Frequently asked questions about root canal treatment
How painful is root canal treatment?
During root canal treatment, the area to be treated is numbed, so you will not feel the procedure, unless the nerve is so inflamed that there is still some mild pain. If so, let us know right away.
What does root canal treatment involve?
In root canal treatment, the dentist removes the living part of a tooth or molar (the pulp). The root canal is then widened with files, disinfected and filled again. Essentially, the nerves are removed from the tooth so that it can no longer cause pain.
Can root canal treatment be postponed?
Postponing root canal treatment is not wise. The longer the inflammation persists, the greater the chance that the entire tooth will have to be removed
How long does root canal treatment take?
Root canal treatment takes on average 1 to 1.5 hours per appointment. The exact treatment time depends on the tooth or molar, the number of root canals and the severity of the inflammation. A front tooth usually has fewer canals than a molar and can therefore often be treated more quickly. A complex root structure or extensive inflammation may require more time.
Sometimes we complete the treatment in one appointment, but two appointments are often needed. During the first appointment we clean and disinfect the root canals and place a temporary filling. At the second appointment we fill the canals permanently and seal the tooth or molar. Beforehand, we explain how many appointments we expect to need and what you can expect during the treatment process.
Will my insurance cover the cost of root canal treatment?
This depends on your (supplementary) dental insurance. We advise you to check with your insurer in advance.
