Crowns and bridges Rotterdam

Is a tooth severely damaged, or are you missing one or more teeth? With crowns and bridges we can restore the function, strength and appearance of your teeth. A crown protects a weakened tooth, while a bridge fills the gap of one or more missing teeth. At Loef Mondzorg in Rotterdam we carefully assess which solution best suits your teeth. We combine modern digital techniques with personal guidance and match the shape and colour of your crown or bridge to your natural teeth.

What is a crown?

A crown is a durable cap that we place over a damaged or weakened tooth. The crown encloses the visible part of the tooth, restoring its original shape, function and appearance. We may recommend a crown when a regular filling does not provide enough strength. The crown protects the remaining tooth tissue and allows you to use the tooth normally again when chewing.

What is a dental bridge?

A dental bridge is a fixed construction with which we replace one or more missing teeth. The bridge consists of an artificial tooth attached to crowns or other supports on either side of the gap. A bridge fills the empty space in your teeth and prevents neighbouring teeth from shifting into the gap. The treatment also helps restore your chewing function, speech and natural smile. You cannot remove a bridge yourself.

What types of crowns and bridges are there?

  • Crowns and bridges can be made from different materials. The right choice depends on the location in your mouth, the strength required and your wishes for the appearance. Possible materials are:
  • Full ceramic
  • Zirconia
  • Porcelain fused to metal
  • Other durable dental materials. For a visible front tooth, a natural appearance often plays a big role. For a molar, a lot of strength is needed to absorb the chewing force. We advise you on which material best suits your situation.

When do you need a crown?

  • A crown may be needed when a tooth is so severely damaged or weakened that a filling no longer provides sufficient protection. With a crown we try to preserve the natural tooth and prevent further fracture. We may recommend a crown for:
  • A tooth with a large filling
  • A broken or cracked tooth
  • Severe wear of the tooth
  • A tooth after root canal treatment
  • An abnormal shape or discolouration
  • Placing a crown on an implant. Before placing a crown, we check whether the tooth root and surrounding gums are healthy enough.

When do you need a bridge?

  • A bridge may be suitable if you are missing one or more teeth and want a fixed replacement. The treatment helps close the gap in your teeth and restore chewing function. A bridge may be considered when:
  • One or more teeth are missing
  • The teeth next to the gap are strong enough
  • You prefer not to wear a removable denture
  • An implant is not possible or not desired
  • Neighbouring teeth already need a crown or large filling. We also discuss alternatives, such as an implant or partial denture, so you can make a well-informed choice.

What are the benefits of crowns and bridges?

Crowns and bridges can restore the function and appearance of your teeth for a long time. The restoration is custom-made and firmly fixed in your mouth. Possible benefits are:

  • Protection of a weakened tooth
  • Restoration of chewing function
  • Replacement of a missing tooth
  • A natural shape and colour
  • Preventing teeth from shifting
  • A fixed restoration you do not have to remove
  • Improvement of your smile and pronunciation

Good oral hygiene and regular check-ups are important to maintain the result for as long as possible.

Treatment process

How does crown treatment work at Loef Mondzorg?

Placing a crown usually takes several steps. We carefully prepare the tooth and make sure the final crown fits your teeth precisely.

  1. 01

    Examination and treatment plan

We examine the tooth, gums and bite. If necessary, we take an X-ray to assess the root and surrounding bone. We then discuss the options, the material and the expected costs.

  2. 02

    Preparing the tooth

We numb the area and carefully reshape the tooth so there is enough space for the crown. If a large part of the tooth is missing, we first build it up with filling material.

  3. 03

    Digital scan or impression

We make an accurate scan or impression of your teeth. We use this information to have a crown made that fits well and matches the shape and colour of your other teeth.

  4. 04

    Temporary crown

If the final crown cannot be placed straight away, you temporarily receive a provisional crown. This protects the treated tooth until the final restoration is ready.

  5. 05

    Placing the final crown

During the follow-up appointment we check the fit, colour and bite. When everything fits well, we firmly attach the crown to the tooth.

Can crowns and bridges be made digitally?

Yes, digital dentistry can be used to design and manufacture crowns and bridges accurately. With an intraoral scanner we can make a digital model of your teeth, so a traditional impression with impression material is not always needed.

The digital scan helps us plan the fit carefully. We can also make the treatment more transparent and share information efficiently with the dental technician. Which digital technique we use depends on your treatment.

How much do crowns and bridges cost?

Is a crown or bridge covered by insurance?

The cost of crowns and bridges depends on the material, the number of teeth, the technical execution and any preparatory treatments. A single crown therefore costs differently from a multi-unit bridge.

After the examination you receive a personal treatment plan and a clear cost estimate from us. Dental treatments are subject to the fees and service codes set annually by the Dutch Healthcare Authority. Laboratory and material costs may differ per restoration.

For a complete overview of current dental fees, please refer to the website of the Dutch Healthcare Authority (NZa).

For adults, crowns and bridges are generally not covered by the basic insurance. With supplementary dental insurance you may be entitled to partial reimbursement.

The amount and conditions differ per health insurer and policy, so check your insurance conditions in advance. You can use the cost estimate you receive from us to ask your insurer how much will be reimbursed.
