What are click-on dentures?
Click-on dentures are a removable denture attached to implants in the jaw. The implants act as artificial tooth roots and give the denture more grip than traditional dentures. You click the denture onto a special attachment system placed on the implants. This keeps the denture better in place while eating, talking and laughing. For daily cleaning, you simply remove the click-on denture.
When are click-on dentures needed?
Click-on dentures may be suitable when your regular dentures regularly come loose, tilt or cause painful pressure spots. Especially in the lower jaw, a traditional denture sometimes has insufficient grip. Click-on dentures may be considered if you: • have difficulty eating because of loose dentures; • feel insecure when talking or laughing; • regularly suffer from pressure spots; • have insufficient grip due to a shrunken jaw; • want more stability and wearing comfort; • are due to replace your current denture. During a personal consultation we examine your mouth and discuss whether click-on dentures are a suitable solution for you.
What is the difference between click-on dentures and regular dentures?
The main difference is that click-on dentures are supported by implants, whereas regular dentures mainly rest on the gums and jaw. As a result, click-on dentures generally offer more stability and can feel more comfortable when chewing and speaking. Traditional dentures can become looser over time because the shape of the jaw changes. Click-on dentures are attached to two, four or sometimes more implants, depending on the jaw and your personal situation. During the examination we determine which solution suits you.
Treatment process
How does click-on denture treatment work at Loef Mondzorg?
Click-on denture treatment takes place in several phases, so the implants can heal properly and the denture can be precisely tailored to your mouth.
-
01
Examination and personal advice
We examine your mouth, jaw and current denture and discuss the problems you are experiencing. With X-rays and, where necessary, additional digital imaging, we assess whether there is enough jawbone.
-
02
Drawing up the treatment plan
Based on the examination, we draw up a personal treatment plan. We discuss how many implants are needed, how the process works, what you can expect from the result and what the costs are.
-
03
Placing the implants
We place the implants in the jawbone under local anaesthesia. The number of implants differs per situation. For click-on dentures in the lower jaw, two implants are often used, while other situations may require four or more.
-
04
Healing of the implants
After placement there is a healing period during which the jawbone bonds with the implants. This usually takes a few months. In the meantime we discuss which temporary solution you can wear.
-
05
Fitting the click-on denture
Once the implants have healed sufficiently, we take an accurate impression or digital scan of your mouth. Your click-on denture is then custom-made, and we check the fit, bite, appearance and attachment.
-
06
Placement and aftercare
We place the final click-on denture and teach you how to insert, remove and clean it. After placement we schedule check-ups to assess healing, the implants and wearing comfort.

How much do click-on dentures cost?
Are click-on dentures covered by insurance?
The cost of click-on dentures depends on the number of implants, the type of attachment system, the denture and any additional treatments. That is why we can only give a reliable cost indication after an examination. During the consultation we draw up a personal treatment plan and you receive a cost estimate, which clearly lists the different parts of the treatment so you know where you stand in advance. For a complete overview of current dental fees, please refer to the website of the Dutch Healthcare Authority (NZa).
Under certain conditions, click-on dentures can be partly reimbursed by the basic insurance, for example in the case of a severely shrunken toothless jaw where regular dentures do not provide enough grip. This care is usually subject to conditions, a statutory personal contribution and possibly your deductible. The exact reimbursement differs per situation and health insurer, and prior approval is sometimes required. We are happy to help you with the necessary information, but advise you to always check your policy and the final reimbursement with your health insurer.
Aftercare and check-ups for click-on dentures
Regular aftercare is important to keep your implants, gums and click-on denture healthy. During a check-up we assess the condition of the gums, the stability of the implants, the fit of the denture and how the click system works. Let us know if:
- The click-on denture feels looser;
- You experience pain or pressure spots;
- The gums around an implant bleed;
- An attachment part does not work properly;
- The click-on denture becomes damaged.
If you have complaints, do not wait until your next routine check-up. By contacting us in time, we can often prevent the problem from getting worse.
How do you care for click-on dentures?
You care for click-on dentures by carefully cleaning both the removable denture and the implants every day. Good oral hygiene prevents plaque from building up around the implants and reduces the risk of inflammation. We advise you to:
- Remove and clean the click-on denture daily
- Carefully brush the implants and gums
- Keep the attachment points clean with suitable tools
- Not clean the click-on denture with ordinary abrasive toothpaste
- Come regularly for check-ups and professional cleaning
During placement we show you exactly how to care for your click-on denture and implants at home.
How long do click-on dentures last?
Click-on dentures can last for many years, but the exact lifespan differs per person.
The denture and the attachment parts are subject to wear and may over time:
- Need adjustment
- Need repair
- Need replacement
Your jaw and gums also keep changing, so the fit can gradually deteriorate.
With daily cleaning and periodic check-ups, we can identify problems early and support the lifespan of your click-on denture and implants.
