Night guard (bite splint)

A night guard (also called a bite splint) is mainly used in the treatment of certain jaw complaints and teeth grinding. This splint relieves the jaw joint and allows it to relax better.

When is a night guard needed?

For jaw complaints, a night guard helps you avoid harmful oral habits (for example jaw clenching, nail biting, cheek or lip biting), which reduces pain in the chewing muscles and jaw joints. For teeth grinding, the night guard protects your teeth, preventing further tooth wear.

How is a night guard made?

To make a night guard, we scan your mouth and record your bite. A dental technician then makes the night guard to measure for you. The splint is made of hard, transparent plastic. It can be used in either the lower or upper jaw and covers all the teeth and molars present.

The specific wearing instructions (when and how long you should wear the night guard) depend on the type of (jaw) complaints and oral habits you have. We will inform you about the most suitable way of wearing it for you.

A night guard for children

Because children are still growing, a night guard made of soft plastic is usually chosen for them. A soft splint is less durable, but does not hinder the growth of the lower jaw or the change from baby teeth to permanent teeth.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a night guard cost?

At the dentist, a night guard costs approximately €350. It can take three weeks before it is ready.

How do I know if I clench my jaw or grind my teeth?

If you wake up in the morning with a tired or cramped feeling in your jaw, there is a good chance that you clench or grind at night. Pain in the molars or headaches can also be a symptom.

How do I keep my night guard clean?

In principle, you can clean the night guard with lukewarm water. Does it need more thorough cleaning? Then use some mild soapy water. Avoid toothpaste, as it is too coarse and can damage the splint.
